The plot takes place in the near future and tells the story of Teresa (Barbara Colen) who comes to her home in Bacurau, a village in the semi-arid region of Brazil, to attend her grandmother’s funeral. Upon arrival, Teresa immediately sees signs that Bacurau is in serious trouble. Basic services are lacking, mobile coverage is lost, drinking water supply is blocked and the drinking water truck comes full of bullet holes. It soon becomes clear that the corrupt government has completely abandoned the village: Bacurau has not only literally been wiped off the map, but its citizens are under attack. As those responsible get closer, the villagers must organize a resistance to prevent further damage.
