Paiton is a young black man with a chance to get married in the upper strata of black society. But first he has to leave a secret, an unborn child with his ex-girlfriend. He desperately needs money and time away from his fiancée, who knows nothing about the baby. He finds the solution in the rich and stubborn Gregory Devereauk (Keith David), a senior monk from his favorite diner. Employed by Devereaux’s estranged daughter as his teacher, Paiton quickly becomes Gregoris ’healer, and the problems with Paitons disappear. But as Devereauk approaches death – as marriage and childbirth approach rapidly – Gregoris ’past sins force Python to rely on his decisions as a man. He finally has to choose: marry the rich or do what is right.
